A little more about Banda Aceh

If anyone we know comes to Sabang island.... Yesterday we checked out Freddie's competition.... Two beaches on the inside of the island, inside what must have been the big caldera.... Gabang Beach, and Iboih. The drive around to there was beautiful, the caldera has so many little islets and we did this in a Becan, a motorcycle sidecar which was nice... Constant fresh breezes. But we found the too little beach resort areas to be dank and depressing, lots of trash, and looking picked over not wild. We got feedback from two different guests at Freddie's that the dive shops were pretty lousy. We instead caught a day of calmer weather and were able to rent snorkels from the cafe at Freddie's and it was very beautiful, many many fish, a sea slug lots of stars. The corals were varied... I think corals all over the world ar suffering a little bleaching and we saw some of this but was lovely. For fins and masks for two, six dollars.

In the afternoon we took the fast ferry back to Banda Aceh city, and caught a becak. There was a downpour so he stopped and put the top up and encased us in a giant tarp so we could see nothing. I realize in traveling its all about you have to let go and trust your taxi drivers etc. Banda Aceh does still scare me a little... We went to a business style hotel, the hotel Medan and ended up in a room high up. The advantage of this is we could hear the muezzins doing the call to prayer! Seemed absolutely endless actually, sent chills up my spine..... Lots of loud preaching by loudspeaker showing what a vital force religion is here for at least a bunch of folks,

Now we are off to lake toba where head hunters turned Christian 100 years ago.... Probably will feel a little different!
